It's not just that the CGI has aged badly, it's that it usually didn't add anything and often detracted from the composition of scenes. I'm not sure what you mean by improvements to the film stock, but the Blu-ray release has a blue tinge added that I'm pretty sure nobody liked, and as for the CGI people have been complaining since 1997 about how he used it to just keep shoving more and more shit into the frame.
